The construction will begin Monday morning, July 14th!  Fencers, we still will need your help moving some of the supplies.  I will be at Magnet at 7:30 AM Monday morning.  Any fencer that can help with this please call me Moday morning to get more specific details.

We successfully obtained the red oak from Magnolia and it is in the fencing room!  Thanks to Jarrod Heilman, Peyton Harriss, John Kinnebrew, Andrew Foster, Sam Hunt, Hannah Midyett, and Josh Atkins for helping unload the wood into the fencing room.  It certainly was no easy task!  More pictures to come next week!

UPDATE: as of Wednesday, July 2, 2008

This coming Monday (the 7th) I will be traveling to Arkansas to pick up the red oak hardwood that will be used as the top surface of the new floor.  It must sit in the fencing room for about a week to become acclimated so that it will not expand or contract after it is installed.
I will be arriving to school at about 3 PM on that Monday to unload that truckload of the hardwood.  It will be a lot of bundles.  If you can help unload please contact me.  If we have enough people to help it should only take and hour or so.  If times change I will let you know.

UPDATE: as of Friday, June 13th, 2008

We have gotten an incredible response from friends, alumni, and current familes wanting to help in some way!  When I started thinking about this huge project I came up with a figure of $10,000 which I hoped could include enough new overhead reels and machines to accomodate four strips in the fencing room.  Thanks to many friends, alumni, and families of Caddo Magnet Fencing, we are close to that original goal!  Again, the build is on schedule to begin in early July, definitely to be completed well before the coming school year begins!  Further donations can help sponsor permanent strips in the fencing room that will include color staining of the wood strips and overhead reels and machines for daily fencing.

Some of you have inquired about tax exemption.  Here's how it will be handled:
If you have made a donation by mail your donation receipt (to include in 2008 tax deductions), will be mailed to you near the end of the summer.  A copy will remain on file at Caddo Magnet.  If you prefer to have it earlier, please contact coach Rob.

UPDATE: As of Wednesday, June 4, 2008
It looks like the building will begin after July 4th for two reasons - July 1 is the beginning of the new fiscal year for the school and also because we need have the project fully funded before we begin building.  We are almost to the point where we can fund this entire project, thanks to donations from friends, alumni, and parents of current and former students.

Please contact Coach Rob Candiloro if you would like to help in any way with the project.

Friends and Alumni of Caddo Magnet Fencing  --

Greetings to all of you! Over the past 28 years Caddo Magnet Fencing has grown into a nationally known fencing program and has been recognized as “one of a kind” in this region. Annually, the fencing program has approximately 120 students directly involved in fencing either in daily physical education classes or on the competitive fencing team. This translates into almost 3500 students since 1980!
In 1991, while under the instruction of Coach Sharron Settlemire, Caddo Magnet was lucky enough to have a room built solely for fencing - a huge step in the progression of our program. It is still in full force, but, unfortunately, over time, our floor has begun to show some wear.

For several years the fencing team here has talked of replacing the current floor in the fencing room here at school. Currently, the floor is simply a concrete foundation with a tile covering. Since you all know that fencing is a very physically demanding sport, you will also know that this type of floor can cause immediate and long term injuries since there is no “give” or “spring” in its design. This is what we intend to change. But we need your help.

Our goal now is to build a new “sprung” wood floor that will last for many years to come, but most importantly, improve the overall safety of fencing here at school. We want to be finished with this floor before the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year so we must act fast. This project will require a lot of supplies. Based on the design of the new floor, it will cost $10,000.

Any contribution to this effort will be greatly appreciated. We are asking for any size of donation that you are comfortable with – every little bit will help. If you prefer to donate supplies such as lumber or nails please contact us directly. Contributor’s names will be permanently displayed in the fencing room upon completion of the project. Any donation will be tax deductible based on our status of a non-profit 501c3 organization. Most importantly, we would like you to respond as soon as possible so we can continue to acquire the supplies to begin the build.

We thank you for taking the time to read about our project. If you would like more detailed information please feel free to call us anytime.  For your records, a tax deduction form can be emailed to you if you make a contribution.  If you prefer, you may make donations in person to the bookkeeper at Caddo Magnet directly to our fencing account at school. Please spread the word if you know friends that may be willing to help!

We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Coach Rob Candiloro and the Fencers at Caddo Magnet High School

As soon as the construction begins pictures will be posted here to help keep you up to date on the progress.
