Caddo Magnet Fencing

Rules and Expectations

2007-2008

First, as a reminder for all returning members, and all who wish to become a member, you must renew your United States Fencing Association membership soon. I recommend doing it soon so you can get all the issues of American Fencing magazine which usually have some good articles.

MOST IMPORTANT about membership

  • Remember to mark Caddo Magnet Fencing as a CLUB under your primary affiliation. In the eyes of USFA, we are NOT a school.
  • Also remember that we are in the Ark-La-Miss Division, not the Louisiana Division.

ANYONE who is in a fencing class or has fencing experience before attending Caddo Magnet is initially eligible to be a member of the Caddo Magnet Fencing team.

To make things clear, here are the rules:

1. First, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, you must exhibit superior sportsmanship and behavior on and off the fencing strip. You are a representative of Caddo Magnet High School and CMFC.  Remember, this includes in your fencing class as well. Your fencing class, if you are in one, should be used to advance your fencing skill and camaraderie of your teammates. The same goes for practice. Your behavior during these times will also be a factor in the decision of Varsity Letters.

2. Your fees for being a member of the team are $20 per semester. Again, this is in addition to class fees if you happen to be in a fencing class during the school day. By paying your team fee you agree to follow all rules and regulations of the team. The fee is non-refundable. If you fail to pay your team fee but are still representing Magnet at competition, you are still obligated to follow all rules of behavior and sportsmanship to be on the team. You also are not eligible to use school equipment at competition until your fee is paid. Read more specifics about this on the Tournaments page.

3. You must be a member of the USFA and maintain Caddo Magnet Fencing as your primary club affiliation. Your secondary membership affiliation is your choice. If you compete under a different primary club or team, you will not be eligible to be a member of this team.

4. All team members must commit to fencing at least six (6) USFA sanctioned tournaments during the school year. This year there will be at least three (3) tournaments in the Shreveport/Bossier area.

To earn a Varsity Letter in fencing one must meet the following criteria:

  • Exhibit superior sportsmanship on and off the fencing strip, no exceptions
  • Compete in at least 6 sanctioned (USFA) tournaments that school year
  • Qualify for the National Junior Olympics or the Summer Nationals
  • Compete in at least one National Fencing event during the school year (JOs can fulfill this requirement)
  • Regularly attend community fencing functions (team practices attendance is no longer a factor in these criteria)
  • Maintain appropriate GPA (over 2.5)

NEW TEAM MEMBERS: I will tell you in advance that fencing can be a very expensive sport. You have the option of purchasing your own equipment but you don’t have to – you can use the school’s if you pay your fee. Other expenditures will include your USFA membership of $50 per year and expenses for travel and tournament fees since the school does not pay for competition - fencing is not an LHSAA sport (Louisiana High School Athletics Assoc.) A weekend trip out of town for a tournament will run about $100-$150 for hotel, gas, food, and tournament fees. This of course varies depending on the tournament and where it is. National events can cost considerably more.

Practices (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30 pm untill ...) will again be optional this year until further notice.

If you have any questions about these issues please ask Mr. Candiloro.

HAVE A GREAT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
